Loop’s parent company, Vintner’s Distributing who operates over 75 Shell, and Chevron station in California came to MSA in 2013 with a unique opportunity. They wanted to reinvent the convenience store model from the ground-up. Working with their branding consultant, MSA developed customer profiles to determine who their current customer is and where there were opportunities to expand that customer base. MSA produced an inviting, modern, and clean pallet that showcased the new merchandise offerings Loop would feature to attract that new customer. MSA included iconic architectural elements that would be unique and make the brand recognizable. The Loop stores met with universal praise, winning many industry awards and has executed in over 30 locations. Subsequently, MSA has worked with the Loop team to develop a smaller format, “Lil Loop,” and a larger size that includes an in-house restaurant.

An opportunity arose for MSA to update AU Energy’s flagship property in Fremont, CA. Incorporating the design package we developed for AU in 2017, MSA converted their dated C-Store and leased restaurant into a brand-right shopping and dining destination. With its unique forecourt canopies, this iconic location was designed initially by AU’s founder in the 1980s. Without drastic changes to the exterior, we brought it into the 21st century with new paint and signing. The interior underwent a complete renovation, including the whole package of Loop branding elements and adding a full eat-in restaurant. Clean lines and a robust graphics package made the space come alive and doubled customer traffic.

Using these insights the team developed the name, identity, interior and exterior design for the new concept set to be rolled out over 100 Shell sites in the next 5 years.

After successfully piloting the new design at an existing convenience store in Silicon Valley, LOOP was launched as a newly branded store. The new store has achieved a 250% improvement in sales growth and is setting a new standard in the industry.
